Mothers Car Wax Review
Mothers Car Wax Review
Today, I wanted to provide a totally different feature for my readers, in hopes you will enjoy this. As a gearhead, I am often asked what products I use and recommend, As a result, I wanted to give an open and honest review of a product I tested, I realize this is a clear departure from my usual, but I hope it is useful to some of you as well.. By the way, this is not a paid endorsement, it is simply my opinion, so take it as such. I am doing a Mothers Car Wax Review for you today, and I hope you enjoy it!
The product is Mothers California Gold Brazilian Carnauba Cleaner Wax Paste – 12 oz, which I get on Amazon. I bought the product myself for my own use.
What Is Mothers California Gold Brazilian Carnauba Cleaner Wax?
Cleaner wax is a topic I have seen debated back and forth for years. Everyone from PhDs to professional painters has chimed in on it, and the debate rages on and on. There are pros and cons to cleaner wax, as with anything else, Let’s start with the basics, first.
Cleaner wax is designed to lightly polish and decontaminate paint. This smoothes out minor imperfections, and makes the paint a little less imperfect. Cleaner wax also removes old wax that may still be on the paint, so it is good for getting down to the paint surface and removing all the old wax. This ensures a good, clean surface to apply a liquid polish or finishing wax. However, cleaner wax is also known for staining some plastic trim pieces, it uses strong abrasives to polish the surface, and is not as durable as regular wax. With that said, I use cleaner wax right after washing and drying the car. After that, I apply a good liquid polish or finishing wax to ensure a smooth, clean, and polished paint job.
First Impressions
To test this container of Mothers car wax, I used my own 2013 C6 Corvette 6 speed Targa, shown above. I was a bit nervous about the product, since the Corvettes have fiberglass bodies. The website stated that this product is good for metal or fiberglass, so I proceeded. The photo above shows the car washed, but not yet waxed. This is our starting point. Once the car was washed and dried, I started the process. First off, Mothers California Gold Brazilian Carnauba Cleaner Wax comes in a 12 ounce tin, shown below.
The logo depicts a cool Ford GT, which we have covered on this blog before. The metal tin that it comes in is nice and solid, and does a good job of keeping the wax inside fresh. I like this much better than the plastic containers, so I am impressed already.
Upon opening the tin, I was pleasantly surprised. Here in South Texas, I often see wax products melt in our heat. Our temperatures usually exceed 95 or 100 degrees in the summer, with humidity well north of 80% being common. Even though I keep this in my garage at my townhouse, it did not melt or run. The wax inside seems firm, yet pliable. It has that pleasant carnauba wax smell to it, and is easily workable while not being runny. That is a definite thumbs up!
Since I am in a rather sunny and hot area, I usually choose to wax my car on a slightly overcast or cloudy day. Today was the perfect day for waxing! The temperature was only 94, so it was not a bad day.
The Test
I like to wax my vehicles one fender or panel at a time, and I start at the top and work my way down. For this experiment, we will focus on the driver rear fender. After waiting 5 minutes for it to dry – which is typical in this humidity, you can see the swirls that form as it hardens. This is what helps it do the work of cleaning the paint. When the wax dries and is removed, it takes with it many of the imperfections and gunk that collect on the paint. This is one of the reasons I like cleaner wax. .Driving around town allows so many pollutants and other junk to stick to the paint, and a wash job alone won’t remove them.
One thing that always bugs me about any paste wax is that it gets in the cracks and crevices, as you can see in the photo above. That is an annoyance, but it comes with the territory with any paste wax, so no points off for that. The wax had a bit of a hard time drying in our humid environment, but again that is typical of any paste wax in our area, so no points off for that. So far, it has been easy to apply, and is drying in about average time.
Wax On, Wax Off
The photo above shows the fender washed and dried, but not yet waxed. As you can see, it was shiny, but not overly shiny at this point. I started by applying the Mothers Car Wax in a circular motion using my wax pad.
Now that I have removed the wax, you can really begin to see the difference. The two photos above are a before and after comparison.. No photo editing or trick photography is involved here, and no other products have been applied – this is just using the Mothers wax.. This is really starting to make a difference in the appearance! The Mothers Cleaning wax did a good job of getting the paint clean. Before, when I ran my finger down the paint, it would skip and grab the paint.. This indicates that there are pollutants and other stuff on the paint. Now the paint is as smooth as glass, and my finger glides across the paint. What a difference it made!
End Result – Mothers Wax Review

Look at the photos above, and see for yourself the difference the wax made. After using the Mothers Cleaner wax, I apply my polishing wax for an even better shine, as mentioned above. Granted, with a cleaning wax there are more steps involved than other processes, but I like the end result. The process of washing, drying, applying and removing cleaner wax, then applying and removing polish wax takes time and energy. As far as I am concerned, it is worth the time and effort. Paint jobs are expensive, so I want to preserve mine for as long as possible.
The Mothers Car Wax used here did not melt, was easy to apply, and easy to remove. It gave the car a shine, removed build up on the paint, and seems to go a long way. I think I can wax my car 5 or 6 times with this one tin of wax, so it should last a year. By the way, one tin of this wax is only around $10 USD, so it is not a very expensive product, either. Amazon has it available with Prime, so around $10 delivered is not a bad price at all.
Mothers California Gold Brazilian Carnauba Cleaner Wax Review – Final Thoughts
Overall, I would say if you want a car wax product that works well, cleans and refreshes the paint, and is not super expensive, this is a great product. to use. I rate this wax 4 1/2 out of 5 stars, based on the ease of use, effectiveness, and price. I included a link above, if you want to read more about it on Amazon.
