Ford GT90 Concept Car
This amazing Ford GT90 Concept Car was an incredibly cool looking car, and had some impressive features. This car was slated to be released initially in 1995, but those plans fell through. From the ashes of this failed project, the Ford GT was born.
The Ford GT90 concept supercar was a concept car developed by Ford in the early 1990s. It was unveiled in January of 1995 at the Detroit Auto Show. It was then billed as “The World’s Mightiest Supercar”. This car was a mid-engine successor to the famed GT40 of the 1960s, and was supposd to be the reincarnation of the beast that won at LeMans.
Development Of The GT90
The Ford GT90 Concept Car was built as a skunkworks, underground, secret project. A small engineering team was able to put this together in just 6 months. Since Ford owned Jaguar at that time, they were able to snag a few components off the shelf from the Jaguar XJ220. Interestingly, before the team put the monster V12 engine into the GT90, they decided to test it on a Lincoln Town Car! I would love to have seen that!
This mid-engine supercar was indeed a mighty performer. This car featured a 48 valve, 720 horsepower DOHC V12 engine with 4 turbochargers. The block and heads were all aluminum, making it light and strong. In essence, the engine was two 4.6 liter Mustang V8 engines fused together with a couple of cylinders chopped off the end. This created a 90 degree V12 with a 4 inch bore and 3.04 inch stroke.
The car was capable of a top speed of 253 miles per hour, and finished the 1/4 mile in 10.9 seconds at 140 miles per hour. The car was capable of 0 – 60 in 3.1 seconds and 0 – 100 in 6.2 seconds. This was an impressive set of specs for a car in 1995! The transmission was a 5 speed custom manual transmission. The exhaust of this car was supposedly so hot that it damaged the body panels in the rear. This required to Ford team to install ceramic tiles similar to those used on the Space Shuttle to keep it from melting on re-entry!
The suspension for this beast was a variant on the old double wishbone configuration. It also used power rack and pinion steering, and had ventilated disk brakes.
The body of the GT90 took one of its styling cues from its older brother, the GT40. The doors were cut into the roofline just like the GT40. Otherwise, this was an entirely new car. The GT90 was built with lots of angles and triangles. It was built around a honeycomb section aluminum monocoque, and the body panels were carbon fiber.
Fate Of The Ford GT90 Concept Car
The GT90 was supposed to be a transition between the original GT40 and the current Ford GT. However, the plans for production were canceled, and thus the car never made it to the showroom.
