1971 Chevrolet Chevelle “Heavy Chevy”

Fellow gearheads, the car we are featuring today checks all the right boxes, and turns heads wherever it goes. This is one of those legendary muscle cars that most any gearhead would love to have. This is the venerable 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle “Heavy Chevy”! They are pretty rare, and this one is a bad boy indeed!

This Chevelle is the one people dream about. The Heavy Chevy was only available for 2 model years, and was only available as an option with the base Chevelle sport coupe.  In 1971, the SS was the true king of the road. The Chevelle SS had available the 454 (we covered a convertible LS6 SS 454 previously), and it was the monster everyone wanted. However, the SS was also known to insurance companies as a bad boy, so the rates for insuring one of these monsters was prohibitive to many buyers.

This meant Chevrolet needed something else to keep buyers interested. They had to provide buyers a car that insurance companies would insure for a reasonable rate, while at the same time give buyers a car with the beauty and brawn to win them over. There wasn’t time to design an entirely new model, so they had to work with what already existed. This is when the “Heavy Chevy” came into existence. It was introduced as a mid-year release to encourage more people to leave the Ford and Dodge car lots and buy something from them instead.

Chevelle

The 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle “Heavy Chevy” came from the factory with a 350, however someone turned this one into a 383 stroker at some point in its life. It makes 425 horsepower, and has stainless valves, 9:1 pistons and Dart 2 heads. It also sports an MSG ignition. This 383 also boasts lots of chrome, including the unique breather on top. This Chevelle was made to run, and I would bet its a blast to drive!

It features a 4 speed on the floor, which makes it even more fun at launch! Although it is not a factory correct restored car, it is still something I would love to own. The car rides on American Racing “Torq Thrust” mag wheels to round out the look, and it really looks mean!

Interior

Inside, it sports black vinyl interior, which is a nice complement to the burnt orange exterior with Heavy Chevy badges. The interior is in good condition, although quite spartan by today’s standards. Manual door locks and windows were the norm at the time, and most people did not pay extra for the power options. The wood-grain steering wheel and 4 speed on the floor are definitely accurate for the era, as is the horizontal speedometer.

Summary

This 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle “Heavy Chevy” may not be a fully restored original, but I personally think its an awesome ride. It is a resto-rod Chevelle with a great paint job and a power-train that is made for fun. Let me know down in the comments if you like these resto-rod classics!
